Escape the Feast and Famine Cycle for good

Escape the Feast and Famine Cycle for good

February 25, 20254 min read

Are you tired of riding the consultancy revenue rollercoaster? One month, you're thriving; the next, you're doom-scrolling LinkedIn and pumping your network, desperate for leads. It’s stressful, exhausting - and entirely fixable.

I’ve been on the journey from inconsistent income to predictable, scalable revenue, and here’s what I’ve learned about breaking the cycle permanently.

The ups and downs of inconsistent income

Here’s what I found.

Each successful month felt rewarding, yet beneath every high was a nagging worry: 'What about next month?' This uncertainty didn’t just hurt me financially - it drained my enthusiasm and clouded my decisions. Would cash flow dry up? One lousy month quickly wiped out three good ones.

Just like most consultancies, I started out with a simple model: deliver great work, get referrals, and win the next project when it comes. It worked… until it didn’t.

Here’s how the feast and famine cycle played out:

✅ You land a big project. You shift into delivery mode, giving your full attention to serving the client.

❌ Marketing and sales take a back seat. You don’t have time to focus on lead generation.

🔻 The project ends. Suddenly, there’s no pipeline - no warm leads, no incoming business.

🚨 Panic mode kicks in. You scramble to find work, take whatever you can get, and repeat the cycle.

This constant scramble doesn't just stress you out - it actively prevents your consultancy from reaching its potential. Growth becomes reactive rather than strategic, limiting your ability to invest confidently in your business.

Building a system for recurring profit

Breaking free from feast and famine doesn’t mean working harder. It means changing your model.

Here’s what that looks like:

1. Shift from one-off projects to recurring revenue

If every client engagement starts and ends with a single transaction, you’re always chasing the next sale. Instead, design your services to create ongoing value:

  • Retainer models – Provide ongoing strategy, advisory, or implementation support.

  • Productised offers – Standardise and sell solutions with fixed pricing and clear deliverables.

  • Subscription-based services – Offer training, community access, or ongoing insights for a monthly fee.

The more predictable your revenue, the easier it is to grow.

2. Build a marketing engine that runs without you

You'll always be behind if you only market when business is slow. Instead, put systems in place to generate consistent inbound leads:

  • Automated content marketing – Share valuable insights regularly via LinkedIn, email, or your website.

  • Lead magnets & nurture sequences – Capture interest and guide prospects toward your offer.

  • Outbound prospecting systems – Use LinkedIn outreach, referrals, and partnerships to stay top of mind.

Marketing shouldn’t stop when you’re busy. With the right system, it works while you’re delivering or recharging on holiday.

3. Streamline your sales process

If sales take too much of your time, you’ll avoid it—and revenue will stay inconsistent. Instead, make it easy for clients to buy:

  • Pre-packaged offers – Clear pricing, clear scope, no custom proposals every time.

  • Qualify leads upfront – A simple intake form or sales page filters serious prospects.

  • Follow-up systems – Automate reminders and nurture leads over time.

Effective sales don't require complexity; they require simplicity. Clear offers, upfront qualification, and timely follow-ups make buying easier for clients and selling easier for you.

When you’re running a small consultancy, taking these steps can look a little like climbing a mountain.

One consultancy I supported used this approach and shifted from custom projects to a clearly defined monthly retainer. Within six months, their revenue stabilised, stress reduced significantly, and they finally felt confident investing in their growth.

Predictable revenue = real freedom

Imagine this:

  • Instead of chasing projects, clients come to you because your marketing is always working.

  • Instead of unpredictable income, you have recurring revenue you can count on.

  • Instead of burnout from chasing the next sale, you focus on growth, strategy, and impact.

That’s the power of escaping feast and famine - and it’s 100% possible when you put the right systems in place.

I know firsthand how transformative these changes are. Breaking free from feast and famine cycles gave me the freedom to invest confidently, think strategically, and truly enjoy my consultancy again. You can achieve this, too.
