From scattergun to strategic: How to simplify your marketing

From scattergun to strategic: How to simplify your marketing

January 29, 20255 min read

Are you tired of feeling like your marketing is all effort and no results? Imagine breaking free of the chaos and using a simple strategy that consistently attracts your ideal clients—and delivers real results.

With the right framework, you can move from reactive, scattergun tactics to a strategic approach that consistently delivers real results. Let me show you how.

Recognising scattered marketing efforts

Scattered marketing often feels like you’re constantly busy but not making real progress. Signs of scattered marketing include:

  • Posting on multiple platforms without a cohesive strategy.

  • Creating content that doesn’t resonate with your ideal audience.

  • Jumping from one campaign to another without seeing them through.

  • Spending more time reacting to trends than executing a plan.

You’re juggling multiple platforms, trying every new trend, and constantly wondering if your next post will finally deliver results. But deep down, you know something’s missing—a real strategy.

I’ve been there—posting on LinkedIn one week, experimenting with ads the next, and hoping my efforts would pay off. The result? Hours wasted and no clear progress. Sound familiar?

The key is recognising the problem and committing to a more strategic approach.

Framework for consistent strategic content

To break free from scattered efforts, you need a framework that ensures every piece of marketing aligns with your goals and resonates with your audience. Here are the five pillars of consistent strategic content:

  1. Clear messaging for a laser-focused audience: Start with clarity. Your messaging should address your ideal client’s pain points, goals, and aspirations. When your audience sees your content, they should immediately think, “This is exactly what I need.”

  2. Aligned channels: Focus on the platforms where your ideal clients spend their time. It’s better to master one or two channels than to spread yourself too thin across many. For instance, if your ideal clients are HR professionals, they’re likely active on LinkedIn. Prioritise LinkedIn over spreading yourself thin across Instagram or TikTok.

  3. One funnel: Streamline your client journey into a single, well-designed funnel that guides prospects from awareness to action with a well-targeted lead magnet. This simplifies your efforts and ensures every touchpoint works together seamlessly.

  4. One offer: Focus on a single, high-value offer that solves a specific problem for your ideal client. By concentrating on one offer, you can refine your messaging and delivery for maximum impact.

  5. Consistent content calendar: Build a repeatable schedule for your content. Whether it’s weekly blog posts, monthly newsletters, or daily social media updates, consistency is key to staying top of mind with your audience. All of your content should support the funnel you've designed, which immediately makes your content strategically aligned.

Practical steps to simplify your marketing process

  1. Audit your current efforts: Take stock of what you’re doing now. Which activities are driving results? Which are draining your time without delivering value? Let go of the things that aren’t working.

  2. Define your ideal client: Everything in your marketing should revolve around your audience. Who are they? What do they care about? How can you solve their problems? The more directly you speak with your ideal client, the more they'll notice you.

  3. Choose your focus: Simplify your efforts by prioritising one or two key channels. For example, if your clients are most active on LinkedIn, focus your energy there instead of trying to tackle every platform. It's much better to get one key channel performing and then apply what you've learned to other channels if you need to amplify your reach.

  4. Batch and automate: Save time by batching similar tasks (e.g., writing multiple posts in one sitting), time blocking and automating repetitive processes using tools like scheduling software.

  5. Measure and refine: Regularly review your marketing performance. What’s working? What isn’t? Use the data to refine your strategy and focus on what matters most.

The simple breakdown

The rule of one:

1️⃣ Ideal client
1️⃣ Funnel
1️⃣ Offer
1️⃣ Channel

Support this with one long-form content item, such as a blog post, that you ideally publish weekly. If weekly is too often, fortnightly or monthly is better than nothing. Send this blog post as your newsletter to nurture leads who weren't ready to buy, and also break it down into daily social media posts.

Your newsletter promotes your long-form content and nurtures your audience. This all points to your funnel, which generates and qualifies ideal prospects for your offer and converts them into ideal clients.

Using this simple approach, you'll have all your essential marketing bases covered. Optimise this so it works consistently before you think about adding more.

When I focused entirely on LinkedIn, my engagement doubled within weeks. With clear messaging, a targeted funnel, and consistent posts, leads began to flow predictably. This focus turned my inconsistent lead flow into a predictable monthly pipeline of 60+ qualified leads.

Why strategic marketing transforms your consultancy

Strategic, consistent marketing is a game-changer for consultancies. By moving from a scattergun approach to a focused, intentional strategy, you’ll save time and energy and see far greater results.

Simplifying your marketing isn’t just about doing less—it’s about getting results from doing what matters.

Clients who adopt this approach consistently see a 3x or better increase in qualified leads within just three months. One consultancy we worked with implemented the 'Rule of One,' focusing on a single high-value offer and LinkedIn. They tripled their lead flow in just three months while cutting marketing costs by 25%.
